One year ago, CivicsEDU was just an idea fueled by passion, vision, and the belief that civic education is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy. Today, we celebrate our first birthday, and what a journey it has been! In just 12 months, we’ve made tremendous strides in empowering communities, fostering civic literacy, and creating spaces for meaningful dialogue. Let’s take a look back at what we’ve accomplished together and get excited for what’s to come.

A Year of Milestones

We proudly partnered with the City of York, SC, to pilot our Civic Academy Program, a four-week cohort-based initiative designed to give participants an inside look at how local government functions. With deep dives into the Planning and Utilities departments and hands-on policy recommendation workshops, this program will not only demystify local governance but also empower participants to become active contributors to their community. The program’s success is expected to set the stage for future collaborations and expanded offerings.

In a bid to better understand the needs of our community, we launched the Civic Pulse Survey this fall. This initiative will help shape our programs by listening to the voices of the Greater Charlotte area. From September 22 through December 1, participants can engage in the survey with the possibility of participating in focus groups to enhance community feedback. These insights will guide our strategy as we look to expand our civic literacy offerings.

We’ve introduced our Civic Seminars and tailored them to engage diverse audiences, delivering clear yet comprehensive insights into civics, local government, and community involvement. Through workshops and community events, we’ve helped foster a deeper understanding of the political and civic processes that influence everyday life.

We also invested in team-building with retreats and structured work sessions designed to prepare for the growth ahead. Whether in person or virtually, our team is continuously refining the way we work, ensuring that every member, from our volunteers to our leadership, is equipped to move our mission forward. As we look to the future, we’re considering new ways to support our staff, including stipends for our volunteers, to ensure they have the resources to continue their important work.

Looking to Year Two

As we step into our second year, our excitement is boundless. Here’s what you can expect from CivicsEDU in the coming months:

Expansion of the Civic Academy Program: Building on the success of our partnership with York, we aim to bring the program to more municipalities in our impact area, reaching broader audiences and offering deeper dives into civic education.

New Initiatives for Youth and Schools: Recognizing the importance of starting civic education early, we plan to launch youth-targeted programs that will empower the next generation of leaders and engaged citizens.

Data-Driven Impact: The results of our Civic Pulse Survey will guide our programming for 2025, ensuring that we are meeting the real needs of our community with tailored, impactful programs.

Strengthening Partnerships: We look forward to collaborating with more local governments, organizations, and community leaders to amplify our reach and deepen our impact.
