In today’s political environment, discussions around political beliefs can often feel like navigating a minefield. Labels like conservative, liberal, moderate, or libertarian are frequently used as partisan shortcuts rather than opportunities for understanding.

To help our community move beyond partisan reactivity toward informed self-awareness, CivicsEDU is proud to announce our newest experiential learning workshop series: The Ideology Lab.

What is The Ideology Lab?

The Ideology Lab is a non-partisan, dialogue-focused workshop designed to help participants explore the origins of their political beliefs, examine the historical evolution of political philosophies, and engage in constructive civic dialogue across the political spectrum.

Rather than debating to “win” or convert others, The Ideology Lab approaches political thought as a social science experiment. It creates a structured, safe environment to ask foundational questions:

• Where do our political beliefs actually come from?
• How have classical political philosophies evolved into today’s modern ideologies?
• How can we communicate effectively with neighbors who view the world differently?

What to Expect at the Workshop

The program is built around interactive reflection, academic history, and structured small-group dialogue:

1. The Foundations of Belief: Participants examine their individual ideology assessment results and reflect on the factors—such as family, community, media, and personal experience—that shape political socialization.
2. The Historical Journey: Participants put on their “political scientist hats” to explore how major political philosophies developed over centuries, participating in interactive activities like the Ideology Match-Up Challenge to understand core tenets without partisan bias.
3. Constructive Dialogue & Common Ground: Using shared ground rules—such as listening to understand, prioritizing curiosity over certainty, and attacking ideas rather than people—participants practice active listening and discover areas of shared values.

Who Should Attend?

The Ideology Lab is designed for anyone interested in deepening their civic literacy and improving how they engage with others in their community. This includes:

• High school seniors and college students developing their civic identity.
• Community members seeking tools for civil, productive political conversations.
• Anyone curious about the historical and philosophical roots behind modern political thought.
