Civics education takes a step forward in the Central Carolinas community as CivicsEDU joins forces with the City of York, SC, to launch the organization’s pilot Civic Academy Program. This initiative aims to empower York residents with comprehensive knowledge about civic engagement, governance, and community involvement.

“CAPs are designed to empower participants to take targeted action that addresses the unique challenges their communities face,” explains CivicsEDU Civic Education and Outreach Director Peyton Babson. “With a focus on the specific needs of the local government and its citizens, we are turning civic knowledge into civic action.”

The York, SC Civic Academy Program, slated to begin in October 2024, will offer a series of interactive workshops, seminars, and hands-on activities designed to deepen participants’ understanding of local government structures, policymaking processes, and civic responsibilities. The program will last for four weeks beginning October 9 and concluding on October 30 with one session per week. The cohort will welcome fifteen resident participants with two from each York City Council district and three selected at-large. Participants will have the opportunity to meet collectively with city leaders, develop policy recommendations, and be recognized for their participation by the York City Council.
The partnership between CivicsEDU and the City of York underscores a shared commitment to strengthening civic literacy and promoting democratic values at the grassroots level. Through collaborative efforts, both organizations aspire to cultivate a culture of civic responsibility and civic pride among residents of York, SC, and beyond.

Applications for the program are currently open until September 25, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their selection via email by September 30, 2024.
